Dear All,
Here we are at the end of August already! Like many of you, I have been driving my MG a lot during this sunny weather. It was nice to see so many of you at the August Club Night . Terry arrived in his immaculate Lancia Fulvia and Mike in his Porsche.
Martin has recently used his immaculate Riley at his daughters wedding – the photos are lovely. Most members have at least one MG, but we’re always happy to welcome any classic cars and their owners as it makes the club more interesting and resilient.
We had thirteen members join us for a cross country drive to the Black Horse at Ireland, including new members Simon and Caroline in their MG Midget. They also have a Triumph TR3.
Ian and Yvonne enjoyed the Octagonal Run at High Wycombe – their second. It was a spectacular tour of 97 miles, with a half way stop at Milestones Museum. They recommend the event as it covers a new part of the country for us.
The Last of the Summer Tour is back! Mike and Alison have revived this excellent event, A 50 mile tour, starting at 2pm and ending at Lavendon – aircraft cockpits and miniature railway. It’s in aid of “Little Lives”.

August 26th to 28th Silverstone Classic – MGBs will be eligible to join a parade lap.
September 25th Gaydon – 60th anniversary of the MGB. We have three members cars in the Timeline Display. Malcolm will be taking my MGB so make sure you stop and say hello.
Goodwood Revival, Kop Hill Climb, Sywell Pistons and Props are all happening in September.
Looking further ahead we have members (I&Y +J&M)booked on the Kimber Run on the 9th October.
11 -13th November, there’s the NEC Classic Car Show.
I’m writing this at the end of July. Fortunately the heatwave has passed and we’re enjoying some pleasant driving weather.
This summer has been hectic for club members with groups heading abroad to France and Belgium, to
shows and displays as well as organised club runs.
As I’ve said before, it’s nice to see the club flourishing offering members a broad range of
activities for members to join in with.
So, for the international runs first. Malcolm and I went to Spa in Belgium to
watch the Summer Classic. It was fantastic with the some fantastic racing and
marvelous cars. Mike, Terry, Alan and Brian J went to the Le Mans Classic,
as well as Ron who went with his son. Apparently the racing was excellent
and the paddock walks exceptional.
Ian and Yvonne and Martin and Jackie have been on a number of MGOC tours, including the Cotswold Caper, New Forest Run.
Roger was planning to go to Laon, so we await an update from him. We had a group of members at the Kimbolton Show, which is a great event with a broad range of nice cars to see. Stephen has been a regular at the Oakley Classic,
a marvellous meeting, every fortnight.
Coming up we have members attending the MGB 60th Anniversary at Gaydon – we have at least THREE cars in the
formal Timeline Display – quite an achievement!
Goodwood Revival, Kop Hill Climb, Sywell Pistons and Props are all happening in September. Apologies if
I’ve missed any of your names. See you at the next Club Night
Octagonal Run Sunday 14th August 2022
Yvonne and I did the run on Sunday 14th August, which was the second one we have done with the club.
The start was at the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf in Saunderton near Princes Risbourgh, which was a very good venue and a pleasant surprise as it is not one we knew of.
After breakfast, which included a full English to bacon or sausage rolls and chats with club members, organiser David Lloyd and a couple in a left hand drive Midget from Norway, complete with a Norwegian flag attached to the side window – it was Jon & Eleanor Karlsen’s , first rally and were taking the car back to Norway at the end of the week.
We set off on the first leg, a 54 mile run to the half way stop at Basingstoke, Jon & Eleanor ended up following for a while but we lost them only to learn their exhaust came loose after experiencing road humps and had to wire it up.
It made a nice change to cover this area as it’s not one we do. We went through Wallingford, Moulsford, Pangbourne, Upper Basildon, Benson and Theale a good flowing route. The half way stop, was the Milestones Museum, a good venue with food and interesting displays.
The route back covered 43 miles to The Gate pub in Bryants Bottom for a natter and BBQ.
Everyone was very friendly and made us welcome, the route map was excellent, accurate, with good graphics and not too wordy.
We thanked the club for a good run and enjoyable day.
Ron’s report of Darans and friends trip to Le Mans
Following our successful trip to Le Mans in 2018 we decided to return this year in the hope that it would live up to our expectations again. I have to say that it was again a fantastic trip.
In his 1959 white lovely MGA with 1800cc MGB engine with overdrive was Daran and friend Tony. Myself in red MGA 1960 1600cc and friend Michael. We met on M1 Toddington Services on Wednesday afternoon, headed south to a Guest House in Folkestone for an overnight stop. Daran lost his overdrive on leaving Toddington Services. On arriving at our guest Daran found the fault to be a broken electrical connection, quick repair and test drive, all okay. We popped into a local pub for a celebration. On walking back to the guest house it started to rain.
Leaving the following morning to Folkestone Le Shuttle for the 08.50 train. Unfortunately it was still raining.
We arrived in Calais. We had planned on our drive to avoid Motorways and toll roads. We changed plans due to the rain and the continued forecast of rain, we decided to get to Le Mans as soon as possible.
We arrived at Le Mans booked into our pre-erected 4 person Event tent courtesy of Travel Destinations. The tents were located in Porsche Curves. With a marquee for food and drinks. Shower blocks and toilets.
The weather was perfect, brilliant sunshine all day and every day from then on.
Their was some fantastic racing including night races.
Daran was especially looking forward to seeing the Japanese 4 rotary engined Mazda 787B, which won the 1991 Le Mans 24 hr race. The sound was amazing. The car did a lap on the Friday and again on Saturday.
Walking around the pits was great. So many displays of cars available to view.
The atmosphere on the site at Le Mans was so good, with so much entertainment available. Fantastic. So much to see, the time just flew.
We left Le Mans on Sunday drove to Rouen (avoiding Motorways and toll roads) the roads and weather was excellent. We had an overnight stop in a Hotel in Rouen.
Continued to Calais on Monday to catch the Le Shuttle and home.
Unfortunately I broke down, or my car did. On the M20 near Folkestone. The AA transported us to a Service Station and found the dynamo spring has misplaced itself off from holding the brushes in place and was not charging the battery. New brushes fitted and homeward bound. A really great time. Hoods down all of the trip from start to finish, even in the rain. We did plan to meet with our other MKmgoc group we didn’t get time, so perhaps next year!!
We look forward to seeing you at our next MK MGOC Club Night on 7th September
